I have been nominated for the Sunshine Blogger Award!

Today is super exciting for me because I have been nominated for the Sunshine Blogger Award! The award is to recognise bloggers that inspire positivity and creativity through their posts and I want to say a huge thanks to Ewen at ewensommerville.com for nominating me. Ewen is a freelance science writer and his posts are awesome so please, please, please go follow his blog here. You won’t regret it!

So as part of my nomination I get to answer some questions put to me by Ewen and then nominate the blogs that I find inspiring.

First, let’s get down to the questions…

“Why did you decide to start blogging?”

I wanted to start blogging to give the public and those interested in science an insight into what life is like working in a lab and what it is like studying for a PhD. There is such a wide gap between society and science research, and too much of research is not accessible to the public which can create a lot of misconceptions about the industry. I want to try and bridge that gap, at least with the research that I am doing.

“What is the long-term goal for your blog?”

On a personal level, I would really just love to improve my writing when it comes to science communication and public engagement (because many scientists are quite scared at the thought of public engagement). But if I could get more people interested in science, or even inspire people to pursue careers in science at the same time then that would be wonderful!

“Do you have a routine or typical plan when starting a new blog post?”

When I have an idea for a post I like to regurgitate all my thoughts on that topic into one document, and then tidy it up into a more readable post. I am trying to get into a routine of posting at least once a week, but it can be a challenge.

“What is your favourite blog post that you have written so far?

I really enjoyed writing my review of Lewis Wolpert’s How we Live and Why We Die as part of my book feature. I’ve always wanted to try and read more in my spare time but have never really tried to find the time. Because I am reviewing a science book monthly on my blog now, it really encouraged me to find that time to read. Plus, I enjoyed reading the book and so it was nice to write my review on it.

“What social media platform has helped you the most to grow your blog?”

Twitter, definitely. I have been able to find so many great scientists on there and read about what work they are doing in a much more informal setting. I’ve also been able to connect to scientists of all backgrounds from all over the world – either young or old, male or female, specialists or enthusiasts. It’s helped me to get my blog seen by a wider audience and I don’t think I would have been able to connect with such a diverse group of people on other social media sites.

“Dogs or cats?”

Cats for sure! You can’t beat cat snuggles when you’re feeling a bit down.

“Where do you find your inspiration for writing blog posts?”

Usually from what I’ve been up to recently. Whether it’s in the lab or when I’ve been out and about travelling.

“What is your favourite book?”

I don’t have a single favourite book. But I am really into romance novels, the sort where you start to miss the characters when you haven’t picked up the book in a while.

“Do you have any special or unusual talents?”

Not that I can think of. But I would love to hear if any of my family/friends think different…

“Where is your dream holiday destination?”

I’ve recently been to Ibiza and that had been my dream holiday destination for years. It didn’t disappoint with its nightlife, beautiful beaches, and the most amazing sunsets I’ve ever seen! The next destination on my bucket list will have to be Northern Europe somewhere to see the Northern Lights!

“Finally, can you summarise your life in three songs?”

My first would be I’m On My Way by Charlie Brown. It’s a song that is fab for changing your perspective on things when life is handing you lemons and the lyrics really do put across that as long as you work hard and fight smart, you will get where you need to be.

My next is Bills by LunchMoney Lewis because every PhD student must have to battle with trying to live their best life on a small student budget at some point right?

And my last has got to be by the lovely Ariana Grande called God is a Woman… I’ll say no more…

Thanks again to Ewen for some super questions and for my nomination – I really appreciate it! Now I would like to nominate the following blogs from fellow PhD students (not all in science) for the Sunshine Blogger Award:

The Scientist and her Cats

Adventures of a Biosciences PhD Student

Katie, K

The life of a PhD student

Science Snippets

The life of a WISE PhD
